Refobacin®

Introduction

Refobacin® is an antibiotic cream produced by the company HERMAL Kurt Herrmann GmbH & Co, which is used against superficial infections with various germs. Refobacin® is only available in pharmacies upon presentation of a prescription and is not freely available for sale. The cream is always available with the same potency of 1 milligram per gram of cream in various package sizes from 5 grams to 100 grams of cream.

The antibiotically effective cream can be used superficially against many infections caused by bacteria, whereby the typical spectrum of Refobacin® application mainly includes bacterial conjunctivitis, corneal inflammation, a barleycorn on the eye, open and infected wounds, purulent skin rashes such as hair follicle inflammation up to abscesses or decubitus (“lying wound”). The most important bacteria that often cause superficial purulent infections are the so-called streptococci (cluster-like bacterial colonies) or staphylococci (rod-like bacterial colonies) or enterobacteria. Since antibiotics are effective against bacteria, a cream with antibiotics is the therapy of choice for purulent skin infections.

What is Refobacin®?

Refobacin® contains the antibiotic gentamycin. Gentamycin is an antibiotic from the group of so-called aminoglycoside antibiotics. This group of antibiotics in turn belongs to the broad-spectrum antibiotics and is particularly effective against the above-mentioned germs.

Broad-spectrum antibiotics are antibiotically active substances that kill a very broad spectrum of different pathogens. Gentamycin is effective against bacteria by penetrating the bacterium and interfering with protein production. Like a human cell, a bacterium with defective proteins can no longer live and dies.

The great advantage of Refobacin® is its use as an ointment. This way of application avoids the many, sometimes serious, side effects that can occur when gentamicin is taken as a tablet or applied directly into the vein. In addition, by applying it to the affected area, one obtains a very high concentration of gentamicin. In addition to the active ingredient Gentamicin, it contains Vaseline, various alcohols, water, silicon oxide and other additives important for consistency and effectiveness.
