Snoring: Dental Splints

Precisely fitted dental splints can counteract the falling back of the tongue during sleep, preventing airway constriction and the snoring that results. The following provides more information on this topic:

  • Mandibular advancement splints (UPS) are prescribed for snoring. Similarly, they can also be used for sleep apnea syndrome if it is mild in severity or the sufferer refuses CPAP positive pressure ventilation. This therapy system is prescribed by the doctor and adjusted by the dentist. After an adjustment period of four to six weeks, a review of the splint should be made and any adjustment that may be necessary.
  • Protrusion splints consist of two splint parts, each for the upper and lower jaw and a hinged connection, which is also used to adjust the degree of protrusion (advancement from the lower jaw from the rest position).Tooth misalignment in healthy teeth as side effects could not be proven. However, it may come to xerostomia (dry mouth) or but hypersalivation (synonyms: sialorrhea, sialorrhea or ptyalism; increased salivation).
