Sports for a dental root infection

Introduction

Many sports enthusiasts who are affected by an inflammation of the tooth root ask themselves whether one may do sports with an acute inflammation of the tooth root and/or whether the physical strain has a negative effect on the organism. If an inflammation of the tooth root is present, then no absolute sport prohibition applies to the otherwise healthy humans. There is basically nothing wrong with light physical strain. However, it should be noted that heavy physical exertion increases the risk of the inflammation worsening and of bacteria entering the bloodstream.

When should I stop doing sports?

A general prohibition of sports in case of an inflammation of the tooth root and otherwise intact health is not to be pronounced, because a light physical training is not to be objected. Nevertheless, one must be aware that the bacteria of a local inflammation of the tooth root can enter the bloodstream if the physical strain is too great. If the immune system is under strain and cannot cope with these pathogens, the bacteria can also strain the heart.

During sporting activities, blood pressure rises, the vessels contract and pain can get worse. It is generally important not to completely exhaust oneself during sports and to exercise in a moderate way. Those affected are on the safe side if they at least limit physical exertion during the treatment period of the dental root inflammation. However, a definitive ban on sport only applies when taking an antibiotic.

What is the effect of sport on the body in case of dental root inflammation?

In the course of the root canal inflammation, an extensive reaction of the immune system takes place. As a result, the blood circulation in the affected areas of the mouth increases significantly. A better supply of blood results in many immune cells (T cells, B cells…) reaching the area of the inflammation of the tooth root.

However, the increased blood flow also means that more bacteria in the oral cavity enter the bloodstream and from there into the organism. This can provoke diseases of the heart, lungs or other internal organs. In healthy people, the risk of suffering an inflammation of the inner skin of the heart (lat.

endocarditis) in the course of an inflammation of the root of the tooth is relatively low. In immunocompromised and/or pre-stressed patients, however, the risk is greatly increased. These patient groups are therefore treated immediately with antibiotics.

If a patient who suffers from inflammation of the dental root does additional sports, the blood circulation continues to increase. As a result, the leaching of bacteria into the bloodstream and the risk of disease also increases enormously. Above all, the risk of germ transfer to the heart is particularly high with dental diseases.

Furthermore, the intense physical exertion during sports can lead to cardiovascular problems, which can result in fainting. In addition, some patients who have done sports with a root-infected tooth despite medical objections report an increase in pain sensation. In case of any uncertainties, it is advisable to contact the dentist directly and clarify possible questions.
