Stomach pain with nausea

Stomach pain (gastralgia) is often accompanied by nausea. There are different causes depending on age, sex and lifestyle. What to do for stomach pain and nausea? And how bad are the diseases really? The next page provides information about the different causes of stomach pain and nausea, what to do and how to interpret the different symptoms.

Causes

The causes of stomach pain associated with nausea are very different: If you have eaten something bad the day before, such as spoiled fish, this leads to stomach pain, which is paired with nausea and often leads to vomiting. Stopping medication, such as painkillers or morphine, can also lead to stomach ache, nausea and hot flushes. Other causes can include

  • A virus
  • A pregnancy

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of stomach pain and nausea is quickly made. Only the specific diagnosis, i.e. whether it is an inflammation of the stomach (gastritis), a simple virus or an intolerance, is more difficult for a layman to judge. A doctor can first try to make the right diagnosis by talking to the patient, taking his medical history.

For example, if the patient notices a strongly black discolored bowel movement (tarry stools), this indicates gastritis. Palpation, i.e. palpation of the abdomen, is also often helpful in detecting any tension. In order to make an exact diagnosis, the temperature must be measured.

If the temperature is very high, i.e. fever, it is probably a virus. However, if the woman is of childbearing age and her body temperature is only slightly elevated (about 0.5-1°), this often indicates that she is pregnant. An allergy test or a gastroscopy can also be helpful in making the correct diagnosis.

Frequency distribution

Stomach pain and nausea are very common. This is mainly due to our eating culture. A roll is quickly inserted between two meetings, then the coffee afterwards. Heartburn, stomach ache and nausea are usually the result. Gastritis or ulcers are also quite common, especially in patients with a high alcohol consumption, as they attack the stomach lining.
