Prophylaxis | Stomach pain with nausea

Prophylaxis

Gastrointestinal infections in particular are usually easy to avoid by hygiene measures. To prevent gastritis or peptic ulcers, the only thing that helps is to avoid alcohol and nicotine as well as caffeine as far as possible. Those who avoid stress and consciously take time for their daily food can usually counteract an irritable bowel syndrome. To avoid inflammation of the pancreas, drinking little alcohol is particularly helpful.

Prognosis

In most cases, the prognosis for stomach pain and nausea is very good: however, most stomach pain with nausea is due to harmless causes. In case of mental overload it helps to take a few days of rest, then the stomach pain and nausea should disappear on their own.

  • In most cases, an infection disappears again after a few days.
  • The irritable bowel, on the other hand, is a permanent sensitivity disorder. Here, stomach pain and nausea can only be avoided if the lifestyle is actively and permanently changed.
  • The prognosis for gastritis is still quite good, but the therapy should be followed consistently to avoid gastric cancer, as often only a surgical intervention with chemotherapy helps.
  • Pancreatic cancer has a miserable prognosis with a life expectancy of about 6 months.

Stomach pain with nausea during pregnancy

Stomach pain with nausea is not uncommon, especially at the beginning of a pregnancy. They can even be the first sign of pregnancy. Classically, the symptoms are accompanied by vomiting, but the absence of vomiting does not rule out pregnancy.

There are many causes of stomach pain and nausea, most of which are harmless and can be explained as a consequence of the numerous physical changes caused by pregnancy. Especially for the gastrointestinal tract, the pregnancy hormones released in the body (e.g. progesterone) mean a change in its usual mobility towards a rather sluggish digestion. In addition to constipation and flatulence during pregnancy, this has the consequence that the food can finally back up into the stomach, where it causes stomach pain and nausea.

The steadily growing child itself also leads to direct constriction in the later course of pregnancy. In late pregnancy, the uterus with the baby reaches directly to the stomach and constricts it, which can also cause stomach pain with nausea. Kicks and movements of the baby can also irritate the stomach to such an extent that it reacts with violent cramps and nausea.

However, there is a life-threatening cause of stomach pain with nausea, the so-called HELLP syndrome, especially in late pregnancy. This syndrome is caused by a liver dysfunction and usually manifests itself as severe pain in the stomach area and nausea. These symptoms occur very suddenly and are of high intensity. A visit to the doctor is urgently necessary in case of uncertainty, especially if risk factors for a HELLP syndrome have existed during pregnancy.
