Take off | MRT of the hip

Take off

As a rule, it is not necessary to undress for an MRI examination of the hip, since the MRI images can also be taken through clothing. Only the shoes should be taken off. However, it is necessary to take off all clothes that contain metal. These can be pants or tops with metal buttons, or underwired bras. If you do not want to take off your clothes, you should make sure in advance that you only wear clothes without metal, such as leggings and a cotton shirt.

Complications

Since there is no radiation exposure for the patient during magnetic resonance imaging of the hip, no complications or side effects are to be expected if all preparatory safety measures (removal of metal parts) are observed. Tattoos or make-up on the skin can, however, heat up the skin at this point due to the magnetic rays and skin irritation can occur. Side effects may occur when contrast medium is administered, if it is not tolerated by the patient.

This can lead to an allergic reaction. In pregnant women, complications can occur during the first three months of pregnancy. In this case, therefore, an MRI should be avoided if possible, unless there is an emergency.

With contrast medium

MRI images without contrast medium can reveal gross changes, but they are not suitable for detecting early-stage disease or the smallest changes or possible metastases. Their advantage of an MRI ́s without contrast medium is that they have almost no side effects, since neither radiation exposure nor allergic reactions are caused by the contrast medium.

Diagnosis

MRI of the hip is now a very good imaging technique for early detection of structural changes in the hip and other joints. Even the tiniest changes in bone and soft tissue can be detected better than with x-rays and computed tomography. For example, hip joint arthrosis can be detected in its early stages by the damaged cartilage. Even small tumors or their metastases can be detected early by the administration of a contrast medium. In cases of very advanced hip arthrosis, MRI diagnostics can provide information as to whether the hip can be preserved or whether an artificial hip has to be inserted.
