The diagnosis

The diagnosis begins with a detailed survey of the symptoms and a physical examination. Based on the character of the pain and burning, many diseases can already be differentiated from each other. During the physical examination, redness, overheating and swelling can be detected, which indicate an inflammatory event.

If there is a suspicion of a disease of the bones, the hip joint or the spine, radiological procedures are used, such as X-rays or CT examinations, on which bony structures can be displayed in high resolution. Ultrasound or computer tomography can be used to visualize possible diseases of the organs of the abdomen or pelvis. In order to exclude inflammatory processes or certain organic malfunctions, a comprehensive diagnosis should also include blood tests.

The treatment

The treatment can vary greatly, as can the many causes of burning in the groin. Since in most cases the complaints of the muscles or tendons are only temporary, the leg and hip should first be spared until the complaints improve. Extremely severe or long-lasting complaints must nevertheless be clarified by a doctor at an early stage, although the therapy can vary greatly.

Symptomatic therapy to relieve the burning sensation can be carried out with mild painkillers. These include above all the drugs from the NSAID group, for example ibuprofen or diclofenac. The causal therapy can be combined with further drug treatments in the case of a skin disease or even with operations in the case of a hernia and diseases of the urinary and genital tract. If, in addition to a burning sensation in the groin, there are also defensive tensions in the abdomen and circulatory problems, the dangerous clinical picture of the “acute abdomen” may be present, which is often treated with immediate surgery to diagnose and remedy the disease. In order to prevent groin complaints caused by muscular problems, inguinal hernias and intestinal disorders, strong abdominal muscles, healthy nutrition and avoidance of risk factors such as obesity and smoking are helpful in the long term.

The duration

The duration of burning in the groin depends on the underlying disease and the severity of the underlying complaints. Simple strains of the musculature can subside within a few days. Typical irritation and discomfort of the fallopian tubes or the testicles can also manifest itself as a temporary burning in the groin and subside within a few hours.

In other cases the duration depends primarily on the treatment status of the underlying disease. Only when this is successfully treated do the symptoms in the groin subside. Drug treatments require a certain amount of time until the active ingredient is present in sufficient quantity and suppresses the inflammation or disease. Surgical procedures can correct the diseases, for example a hernia, immediately, but require a subsequent recovery phase of a few days to weeks.
