The high-protein diet

In a protein diet, the proportion of proteins in the diet is increased, while carbohydrates are largely avoided. It is therefore a form of low-carb diets. Since proteins satiate longer and faster, you consume fewer calories without going hungry and can therefore lose weight effectively and in the long term.

At the same time, a reduction of muscle mass is counteracted, which otherwise threatens with a calorie deficit. Nevertheless, the amount of protein consumed should not be unlimited and carbohydrates should not be completely avoided. (Unlike a diet without carbohydrates) Likewise, high-quality fats are also important in a protein diet for a balanced diet.

There are also certain contraindications for which a protein diet should not be followed. In principle, this type of diet does not comply with the rules for a healthy diet and the recommendations for nutrient intake. The high protein content causes an increase in urinary substances and the kidneys are stressed.

The bone metabolism is affected because more calcium is excreted and the risk of kidney stones is increased. In the course of these diets, it is very important to drink a lot to relieve the kidneys. The uric acid in the blood also increases and this can cause gout.

The supply of animal fats and Cholesterin is too high, which can affect the blood fats negatively. The proportion of carbohydrates and the fibre intake of such diets is too low. In the first days of such a diet the weight loss is usually relatively high, not due to real fat loss but rather water loss through the kidneys.

Procedure of the diet

In a protein diet, mainly protein-rich foods are consumed. These include lean meat and fish, eggs, cheese, quark or yoghurt. Protein shakes can also be incorporated into the diet.

Vegetables are another important part of the diet. However, carbohydrate-rich food should be avoided during the diet. These include rice, pasta, white flour products, potatoes and sweets.

Fatty meat or dairy products with a high fat content must also be avoided. Wholemeal products, nuts and fruit with a low fruit sugar content should be consumed in small quantities. Those on a diet should always eat a full diet at mealtimes to prevent ravenous appetite attacks. Part of the protein diet is also that there should be a maximum of three hours break between meals, as the digestive tract should be kept in continuous operation.
