Treatment
So far, there is no causal (concerning the cause), but a purely symptomatic (aims at reducing or eliminating symptoms) therapy. There is a risk of medication misuse and consequential damage caused by long-term medication. A comprehensive = multimodal treatment concept is crucial as with all chronic illnesses, which apart from the medical (medical therapy = specialist for pain medicine, rheumatologist) and physiotherapeutic sport-therapeutic treatment should absolutely include a psychological behavior therapy (psychotherapists-psychologists) with emphasis pain accomplishment and nourishing advisors. Also operational procedures are accomplished, with which thickenings and adhesions at the fibromyalgischen pressure points are solved, which are however very controversial.
Drug therapy
- Antidepressants that interfere with the serotonin balance and above all have an effect on the treatment of chronic pain processes, in particular the 5-HT3 receptor antagonist tropisetron, in which, according to the study situation, a partial freedom from symptoms can be achieved.
- Furthermore, tricyclic antidepressants such as amitryptilin or serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) are used, which can have a positive influence on the sensation of pain.
- Antiepileptic drugs for the treatment of neuropathic pain
- Muscle relaxants, which have a beneficial effect on muscle relaxation
- Medicines for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome
- Less frequent use of classic painkillers (e.g. paracetamol)
- Non-steroidal creams (e.g. Proff® pain cream)
- Rarely opiates (e.g. Tramal or Valoron)
- Cortison or anti-inflammatory rheumatism medicines bring usually small success
