Therapy | Swelling of the palate

Therapy

Depending on the cause, there are various therapy options. A bacterial tonsillitis can be treated well with antibiotics. For viral infections, usually only painkillers and antipyretic drugs help.

For sore throats, sore throat tablets can be purchased over the counter from the pharmacy or painkillers such as ibuprofen can help. In case of allergic reactions, either antihistamines or cortisone are administered, depending on the extent of the allergic reaction. Local cooling is always helpful for all swellings.

Home remedies that help with swelling of the palate include teas, camomile, sage and lime blossom. They can either be drunk or used for gargling. As they have antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects, they can be used for all forms of inflammation in the mouth area.

Cranberry juice also has an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effect and can be drunk for inflammatory swelling of the palate. Another good measure against painful swellings is cooling. For example, one can drink cool drinks or occasionally suck on ice cubes.

Spicy, acidic or spicy, crumbly foods and drinks, including coffee, should be avoided. Better are porridge or pureed soups made of light and mild ingredients. It is also important to always drink a lot in case of inflammations in the mouth area to keep the mucous membranes moist, to promote regeneration and wound healing and to reduce pain.

Prognosis

In general, a swollen palate always has a good and fast healing tendency, as it is usually of inflammatory origin and the mucous membrane is well supplied with blood and regenerates quickly. They can be treated well with home remedies. However, if this does not have a sufficient effect, a doctor should always be consulted.

Prophylaxis

Prophylactic against an allergic swelling of the palate is above all the avoidance of allergens. To prevent inflammatory swelling of the palate, it helps to strengthen the immune system, through regular exercise and a balanced, vitamin-rich diet. Foods that strengthen the immune system are mainly citrus fruits, as they contain a lot of vitamin C, but also green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, cabbage and carrots, as they contain a lot of beta-carotene – the precursor of vitamin A. Excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking as well as much stress should be avoided if possible.
