Tonoftal Cream | Ointment against athlete’s foot

Tonoftal Cream

Tonoftal Creme® contains the active ingredient tolnoftat. Tolnoftat has a killing effect on the fungal species of the dermatophytes, but is ineffective against yeast fungi. Therefore, it is not suitable as a broad-spectrum antifungal agent for athlete’s foot therapy against unknown pathogens.

The first choice in this case would be preparations which simultaneously kill several fungal species, e.g. preparations with bifonazole or terbinafine (see above). The efficacy of Tonoftal Creme® is classified as considerably weaker in comparison with the other preparations already mentioned. The cream should only be used during pregnancy in consultation with a physician; it must not be used during the breastfeeding period.

The drug can be used in children without hesitation. Tonoftal Creme® is applied 1-2 times a day to the affected skin areas. After the symptoms have subsided, the treatment should be continued for one to two weeks to completely eliminate the fungal infection. Interactions with other drugs are not known. Treatment with Tonoftal Creme® can lead to allergic skin reactions.

Daktar 2% Cream®

Daktar 2% Creme® contains miconazole as the active ingredient. Miconazole is built into the cell wall of the fungus. This hinders its function and the cell dies.

In addition, miconazole inhibits various metabolic processes of the fungal cells and thus has an antifungal effect. The cream is used particularly with foot fungus, which was caused by yeast fungi. As a rule, it must be applied twice daily for at least 14 days until the fungus is completely destroyed.

During pregnancy and lactation the medicine should not be taken if possible or only in consultation with a physician, since a certain amount of it enters the mother’s blood. The treatment with Daktar 2% Creme® can lead to an increase in the effectiveness of the medication if certain other drugs are used at the same time. Thus the effect of blood-thinning drugs can be strengthened (e.g. warfarin, Marcumar).

The same applies to some drugs used to treat diabetes mellitus, e.g. sulfonylureas. The effect of Phenytoin (drug against seizures) can also be enhanced. Possible side effects of the treatment with Daktar 2% Cream® are rashes, redness, itching and burning. Very rarely (less than 1 in 10,000 people treated), systemic side effects such as shortness of breath and drop in blood pressure may also occur.
