Tonsillitis (Tonsils Inflammation): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils).

Family history

  • What is the current health status of your relatives?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Do you suffer from sore throat and/or fever?
  • Are your tonsils swollen?
  • Are you noticing any clotty speech?
  • Do you suffer from bad breath?
  • Do you have enlarged lymph nodes? If so, where?
  • How long have these symptoms lasted? Do they occur more frequently?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you practice adequate hygiene of your hands?
  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
  • Do you exercise regularly in the fresh air?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (infections; immunodeficiencies).

  • Allergies
