Transplantation of the uterus
The first uterus transplantation was performed in 2011 in a Turkish patient who was born without a uterus. The organ came from a deceased donor. In September 2012, two women in Sweden were each successfully transplanted one uterus from a living donor.
The first recipient of the uterine transplant has been pregnant since April 2013 after the implantation of an embryo and there is a justified hope that this pregnancy can be successfully carried out. Thanks to this new procedure, completely new possibilities are opened up for the many women who are born without a uterus or who have it removed during their life due to illness. For them, too, it now seems quite possible that the desire for a child no longer needs to remain unfulfilled. Further developments and tests in this area are still pending.
