Treatment of iron deficiency
The treatment of iron deficiency anemia is usually done with medication. The iron sulfate can be taken as juice or in tablet form. Before taking iron deficiency anemia should of course have been diagnostically confirmed by the doctor, as iron can lead to side effects or interaction with other drugs.
In many cases, iron sulphate is only taken temporarily, i.e. over a certain period of time, and is discontinued when the iron level returns to normal. For this purpose, blood tests are carried out at the doctor’s, usually at intervals of a few weeks to months. In cases of very severe iron deficiency, the iron can also be applied through a vein.
The physician then speaks of parenteral iron substitution. Although this allows the values to rise quickly, it also involves risks, which is why this is a procedure that is only used in cases of very severe iron deficiency or if the absorption of iron in the stomach and intestines is disturbed.
