Treatment | Pain in the elbow – What is behind it?

Treatment

Most complaints in the elbow must first be treated by sparing it. Especially inflammations and bruises of the joint should be immobilized until the pain is bearable. Physiotherapy can then be performed to maintain or restore mobility in the joint.

Under certain circumstances, for some bursitis, surgical removal and clearing of the inflammation may be necessary. In advanced stages, arthrosis can also be treated surgically. For this purpose, complete prostheses for the joint are possible if the cartilage is very worn. Some local complaints, such as foreign bodies in the joint, can also be treated by arthroscopy. Arthroscopy is both a diagnostic and therapeutic tool.

How long does elbow pain last?

The duration depends strongly on the cause of the pain at the outer elbow. Tennis elbow, for example, can take a long time to develop. Only through consistent protection can tennis elbow be cured sustainably.

Very often the pain returns after renewed, earlier, sporting activity and can even become chronic, i.e. persist for more than half a year. Arthrosis of the elbow joint cannot be cured. It develops over years, but the pain can occur suddenly.

Your treatment will last for the rest of your life. However, the arthrosis does not always have to be painful.
