Vaginal pH Measurement

The pH of the vagina is normally around 3.8 to 4.5.

If this value is elevated, this may be an indication of a bacterial vaginal infection.

Such infections often occur during pregnancy and are often noticed too late. Increased discharge, itching and burning of the vagina can be signs of such an infection.A vaginal infection that is not treated can ascend into the uterus and then represents a risk factor for:

  • Premature labor
  • Premature rupture of membranes
  • Cervical insufficiency (weakness of the cervix)
  • Late abortionmiscarriage after the 12th week.
  • Premature birth

The procedure

The vaginal pH is simply determined using a test strip or test glove. The test paper changes color and is compared with a color code. Depending on the coloration of the test paper, the current pH can be determined in this way.If the pH is elevated to above 4.5, a vaginal infection is present. An elevated pH value necessitates a vaginal swab. This is then examined for bacteria. In this way, it can be clarified which bacteria have caused the infection and what type of treatment is necessary to eliminate the infection.

Benefits

Measuring vaginal pH is a simple procedure that gives a quick indication of a possible vaginal infection. Thus, a common and preventable reason for preterm birth can be detected in time and targeted vaginal treatment can be given.
