Introduction

Wick medinait® is a combination preparation of several active ingredients that is used to relieve the symptoms of colds. The various active ingredients are intended to relieve pain and coughing and to reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa. Wick medinait® is available either as syrup or juice.

The preparation can be purchased over the counter at the pharmacy. As a combination preparation, Wick medinait® contains four different active ingredients that belong to different classes of medication. Paracetamol belongs to the painkillers (analgesics).

It is used to relieve pain in the limbs and throat that is typical of colds and also has an antipyretic effect. Ephedrine belongs to the group of sympathomimetics and is similar to adrenaline. In the dosage in which it is present in Wick medinait®, it serves primarily to reduce swelling of the nasal mucous membrane, which results in improved breathing.

The third active ingredient, doxylamine, is an antihistamine. It alleviates cold symptoms such as rhinitis and, in this dosage, also has a slightly sedative effect, i.e. it promotes falling asleep and sleeping through the night. The fourth active substance, dextromethorphan, belongs to the group of cough suppressants (antitussives). It provides relief from the cough stimulus typical of colds.
