Interactions

Since Wick medinait® combines four active ingredients, there may be a variety of interactions with other drugs. The active ingredient doxylamine has a sedative effect (inhibits drive) and should therefore not be taken together with other substances that cause sedation. These include some antidepressants, some neuroleptics and sleeping pills.

A combination with alcohol should also be avoided because of the possibility of a significantly increased sedating effect. Doxylamine has some so-called anticholinergic side effects, including constipation, difficulty passing urine, dry mouth and difficulty in adjusting the eyes (accommodation). Therefore, if possible, doxylamine should not be combined, or only carefully combined, with other drugs that have a similar spectrum of side effects.

These include tricyclic antidepressants, for example. A combination with MAO-inhibitors (drugs used to treat depression) should also be avoided. The active ingredient paracetamol can, when used over a longer period of time and combined with blood thinners (anticoagulants), lead to an increase in their effectiveness, which in the worst case can lead to life-threatening bleeding.

Contraindications

Wick medinait® must not be taken in case of known hypersensitivity to one of the four ingredients (paracetamol, ephedrine, doxylamine, dextromethorphan).Furthermore, there are contraindications that apply to the individual ingredients. The most important ones are briefly listed below:

  • Paracetamol should not be taken in severe liver failure.
  • Contraindications for the use of doxylamine are a certain form of glaucoma (narrow-angle glaucoma), pheochromocytoma, an enlarged prostate (prostate hyperplasia) in the stage of residual urine formation and pre-existing epilepsy.
  • Contraindications for the use of Wick medinait® due to the active ingredient ephedrine are high blood pressure (hypertension), pheochromocytoma, a certain form of glaucoma (narrow-angle glaucoma), an enlarged prostate (prostate hyperplasia) in the stage of residual urine formation and hyperthyroidism.
  • Other contraindications for the use of Wick medinait® are asthma, COPD, (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), pneumonia and respiratory insufficiency.
  • Wick medinait is not suitable for children under 16 years of age. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.

Since Wick medinait® contains sugar, its use should be used with caution in the case of various sugar metabolism disorders (for example hereditary fructose intolerance).

  • The sugar content of Wick medinait® must also be taken into account in patients with diabetes. Due to the light sedative properties of doxylamine, taking Wick medinait® leads to limited fitness to drive due to an increase in reaction time. Active participation in road traffic should therefore be avoided in the hours after ingestion. Wick medinait® should not be taken by persons who were formerly addicted to alcohol, as it contains alcohol.
