What happens after the vaccination?

Refreshment depends on whether a fast or slow basic immunization was performed. While in the case of the fast (3-week) basic immunization, the vaccination protection lapses after 12-18 months, in the case of the slow (12-month) immunization it lasts for up to 3 years. The frequency of the booster also depends on the age of the patient.

The following applies to the rapid vaccination schedule: For each age group the first booster should be given after 12-18 months. From the first booster, a further booster must be given every 5 years for the age group 12-49 years and every 3 years for the age group over 49 years to maintain protection. For the slow (conventional) vaccination schedule: The first booster should be given after 3 years, regardless of the age of the patient.

For the following boosters, the interval is also 5 years in the age group 12-49 years and 3 years in the age group 49 and older. It is important to enter the vaccination in the vaccination certificate, as this will help to avoid mix-ups and shifts. In the worst case a year is confused and the patient has no vaccination protection for one year.

In any case, sport should be avoided on the day of vaccination. Sport always puts a strain on the immune system. The body is put under stress by intense physical activity, which results in the release of the stress hormone cortisol.

Cortisol in turn inhibits the immune system. After a vaccination, however, the immune system has enough to do with dealing with the vaccinated virus sample anyway. This is not a good prerequisite for staying healthy.

The recommendation not to do sports after a vaccination is not because the injection site may cause pain during sports, but to protect the immune system. After all, after a vaccination the body is more susceptible to pathogens that we usually encounter on a daily basis and which otherwise do not pose a major problem for us. As a rule, sports can still be done after a vaccination without making the vaccination less effective.

However, the body is weakened after the TBE vaccination and should get some rest to recover after the vaccination. Therefore, one should not do any more sports on the same day after an TBE vaccination. This is easier on the body and allows it to process the vaccination better.

The day after the vaccination, you can do sport again, but you should pay attention to possible warning signals from the body and reduce the amount of sport if necessary. In general, there is nothing to be said against drinking alcohol after the TBE vaccination, as the effectiveness of the TBE vaccination is not reduced by alcohol. However, alcohol weakens the body, as energy is needed to break down alcohol. It is therefore not sensible to weaken the body if it is already weakened by the TBE vaccination. If the consumption of alcohol is only a beer or a glass of wine, this is quite harmless. However, heavy alcohol consumption shortly after the TBE vaccination should be avoided.
