With or without hyaluronic acid? | Artificial tear fluid

With or without hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid belongs to the polysaccharides and to the subgroup of glycosaminoglycans. Glycosaminoglycans have a slightly negative charge, which enables them to bind water. This is therefore their main task in the human body; they also fulfil this purpose in artificial tear fluid.

That is why hyaluronic acid provides the eye with moisture. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the eye, which is why it usually does not cause any side effects. Dry eyes can therefore be treated well with hyaluronic acid; whether a product with or without hyaluronic acid is more suitable depends on the individual.

Is artificial tear fluid also available without preservatives?

There is a wide range of artificial tear fluid without preservatives. Preservatives in artificial tear fluid are used to make the fluid last longer and to keep it low in germs even after multiple use. However, they can also irritate the eye. Therefore, it is recommended to avoid preservatives especially in case of frequent and regular use. Often, for example, drops are then sold as single doses and are somewhat more expensive than products containing preservatives.

The costs

The cost of artificial tear fluid can vary quite a lot depending on the product and manufacturer you choose. As a rule, eye drops are cheaper than sprays or gels, but there may be exceptions. 20 ml of artificial tear fluid in drop form usually cost around 10 Euros, although more expensive products are common.

So it is worth comparing the prices. Attention should also be paid to the compatibility of the product. Products with preservatives, for example, are usually a bit cheaper, but often less well tolerated.
