Contact lenses | Artificial tear fluid

Contact lenses

Artificial tear fluid can improve the wearing comfort of contact lenses. Soft contact lenses, in particular, can lead to drying of the eyes; with hard contact lenses this risk is lower, but also exists. This can lead to irritated eyes and blurred vision.

Artificial tear fluid can help with such symptoms. It should be noted that not every type of artificial tear fluid is suitable for every type of contact lens. In this case, the manufacturer’s instructions should be observed and, in case of doubt, an optician should be consulted. Although artificial tear fluid causes a short-term improvement of the symptoms, a doctor should be consulted in case of complaints to exclude diseases. In addition, it should be checked whether another type of contact lens is better tolerated and artificial tear fluid is then no longer needed.

Drops, gel or sprays – which is better?

Artificial tears are offered in different application forms. The ingredients often hardly differ. Whether one uses drops, sprays or gels depends mainly on how often and intensively the eyes need care.

In addition, it is of course important that the ingredients of the artificial tear fluid actually end up in the eye. Drops, sprays or gels are applied to the eye in different ways. If one form of application does not work, you should consider switching to another.

Even if a certain product is not tolerated, a change to another form of application can be considered. The decision whether to use drops, spray or gel should be made individually. There is no general recommendation in this respect.

The product that best suits one’s needs must be found.

  • Eye drops are usually more liquid than gels or sprays and therefore do not remain on the eye for as long. They are well suited for the regular care of dry eyes.
  • Gels or sprays are usually somewhat thicker and remain longer on the eye. This may cause the view to become somewhat blurred after application. They are recommended for very dry eyes that require more care.
