SLAP lesion – duration

The healing time of a SLAP lesion varies depending on the extent of the injury and the care provided. Slight tears that have been treated early usually heal well. Overuse, trivialization, or unrecognized concomitant injuries can lead to chronicity.

After a simple arthroscopic smoothing, the arm can usually be directly mobilized again early on. The prognosis is good. After suturing or concomitant injuries of the rotator cuff, immobilization for several weeks is indicated. Follow-up treatment can be performed afterwards. The prognosis is also good in this case, but healing takes a little longer.

SLAP lesion – exercises

When the physician releases the shoulder joint for physiotherapeutic exercises after a SLAP lesion, the main focus after mobilization is on strengthening the rotator cuff. The muscles of the rotator cuff move and stabilize the shoulder head in a more coordinated manner within the joint. Changes in the joint mechanics that put strain on the cartilage lip can be remedied.

Exercises with the Theraband are recommended. There is a variety of other exercises that strengthen the rotator cuff. Stabilizing and coordinative exercises should also be performed.

To ensure safe joint function. Stretches for shortened muscles should also be included in the exercise program for a SLAP lesion. More exercises can be found in the articles:

  • The patient stands upright or sits straight on a stool.

He stretches both arms in front of the body at an angle of 90 degrees to the front. A Theraband is held loosely with both hands. The affected arm now pulls the Thera band backwards, as if you wanted to draw a bow.

The elbow remains at shoulder height and moves backwards in a straight line. The shoulder blade moves towards the spine. The upper body remains fixed in space during the exercise, the gaze directed forward.

After the arm has been pulled back, the patient holds the tension for a few seconds and then releases the position. The exercise is performed in 3 sets of 15 repetitions on both sides. Between the sets, there should be a break of about 60 seconds.
