Benzylpiperazine

In many countries, no drugs containing benzylpiperazine are registered. Legally, it is a narcotic that is not prohibited in principle, but is subject to strict controls. Benzylpiperazine is traded illegally in the form of tablets and capsules.

Structure and properties

Benzylpiperazine (C11H16N2, Mr = 176.3 g/mol) is a benzyl derivative of piperazine. It is structurally related to amphetamine and is produced synthetically.

Effects

Benzylpiperazine has central stimulant and psychotropic properties. The effects are due in part to the release of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine and are comparable to those of dexamphetamine. However, benzylpiperazine is less potent than dexamphetamine.

Indications for use

Benzylpiperazine is abused as a stimulant intoxicant, for example, as a party and club drug. Medical indications are not known. Benzylpiperazine has been studied as an antidepressant but has not been developed.

Dosage

The usual dose ranges from 50 to 500 mg. Benzylpiperazine is usually administered perorally.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include anxiety, agitation, palpable heartbeats, rapid pulse, high blood pressure, hyperventilation, vomiting, confusion, dizziness, insomnia, and headache. Severe side effects such as convulsions, collapse, hyperthermia, respiratory arrest, organ failure, and death have been reported. In our view, consumption is not recommended due to the potential health risks.
