Further therapeutic measures

In addition to mobilizations, strengthening exercises and massages, the patient can improve his complaints by warmth with an ISG blockade. The heat stimulates the metabolism, increases the removal of waste products and thus reduces the tension in the tissue. Heat plasters, grain cushions or hot air radiators can be used.

A sauna or a warm bath can also have a supportive effect. Tape plasters can be applied to the affected muscles so that blood circulation is increased during the process. In addition, swimming or moving around in the water can have a positive influence on the complaints, as the body weight is lost for a certain period of time.

The loosening of adhesions of the fasciae with the fascia roll is now also a frequently used method, which is also very effective. Yoga, Pilates or other gentle exercise classes are recommended for mobilization and gentle, thorough strengthening. From a medical point of view, pain and inflammation-reducing medication is often prescribed for ISG blockages.

Summary

The sacroiliac joint (ISG) is located at the end of the lumbar spine. Here, the sacrum articulates with the ilium (iliac scoop) via a small joint surface. Movement in this joint is minimal, but can quickly become blocked by an unfavorable movement or a wrong step.

Ligaments around the bony structures of the pelvis provide stability during movement. Muscles originating at the pelvis provide stability of the pelvis when walking and minimal movement in the joint. A step into the void, a pelvic obliquity or a wrong movement can lead to a blockage in the ISG, which is usually difficult to resolve.

An ISG blockage can be caused by a wrong movement or a “stepping into nothing”. Often a longer-term treatment is necessary, since several muscles harden due to the high muscle tension in the area of the pelvis to protect against further injuries. Once the therapist has found out in which incorrect position the ISG is located, it can be mobilized and manipulated accordingly.

Exercises to strengthen the deep abdominal and back muscles to achieve a holistic stability are very important. In addition, the strengthening of the leg muscles and the stretching of the shortened muscles are also important to achieve a long-term improvement. Coordination exercises are also necessary for intensive strengthening, as the interaction of several muscle groups is extremely important. If the musculature is trained intensively, problems in the ISG area occur less frequently.

Relieving tension in the area of the affected muscles is possible by simple massage or by using a fascia roller for self-healing. In order to avoid a frequent occurrence of the complaints, a regular training should take place.
