Respiratory System (J00-J99)

  • Hyperkeratosis of the tonsils – thickened horny layer of the palatine tonsils.
  • Pharyngitis – inflammation of the mucous membrane of the throat.

Blood, blood-forming organs – immune system (D50-D90).

  • Angina agranulocytotica – inflammation of the lymphatic pharyngeal ring associated with ulceration (ulcers), indicating agranulocytosis (absence of certain cells of the immune defense).

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Angina Plaut-Vincent – inflammation of the pharyngeal lymphatic ring due to infection with various bacteria, which can lead to necrosis (tissue destruction).
  • Diphtheria (real croup) – notifiable infectious disease.
  • Herpangina – infectious disease of the lymphatic pharyngeal ring (with vesicle formation), which usually occurs in childhood; the causative agent is group A coxsackie virus.
  • Pfeiffer’s glandular fever (mononucleosis infectiosa) – inflammation of the lymphatic pharyngeal ring caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV); occurs mainly in children and adolescents.
  • Scarlet angina – infectious disease of childhood, accompanied by a rash all over the body.
  • Thrush – fungal infection that leads to whitish coatings on the mucous membrane.
  • Syphilis (Lues) – sexually transmitted infectious disease.
  • Tuberculosis (consumption) – infectious disease that affects mainly the lungs.

Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48).

  • Tonsillar carcinoma (cancer of the palatine tonsil)

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99)

  • Glossopharyngeal neuralgia – usually unilateral facial pain originating from irritation of the lingual nerve.
