General measures
- Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on existing disease.
- Avoidance of environmental stress:
- Copper
- Snake and spider venoms
Conventional non-surgical therapy methods
- In bone marrow transplantation, bone marrow is removed from the donor’s iliac crest via a punch. From this, the stem cells are isolated and injected into the recipient.Indications for bone marrow transplantation are primarily the congenital defects of erythrocytes such as sickle cell anemia (med.: drepanocytosis; also sickle cell anemia) or thalassemia.
- In stem cell transplantation (more precisely: hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; HSCT; blood stem cell transplantation), which is a further development of bone marrow transplantation, stem cells are increasingly taken from the donor’s blood and injected into the recipient. The indications correspond to those of bone marrow transplantation.
- Administration of blood products, in this case erythrocyte concentrates, is performed mainly in acquired defects such as paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria.
Vaccinations
The following vaccinations are advised, as infection can often lead to worsening of the present disease:
- Flu vaccination
- Pneumococcal vaccination
Regular checkups
- Regular medical checkups
Nutritional medicine
- Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
- Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
- A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit).
- Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
- High-fiber diet (whole grain products).
- Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
- See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.

Sports Medicine
- Intense jogging or intensive marches can be the cause of hemolytic anemia, so sports activity should be done only after consultation with the doctor!
