Ceftazidime is commercially available as a solution for injection and infusion (Fortam, generic). It has been approved in many countries since 1984. In 2019, a fixed-dose combination with the beta-lactamase inhibitor avibactam was registered; see Avibactam (Zavicefta).
Structure and properties
Ceftazidime (C22H22N6O7S2 – 5 H2O, Mr = 637 g/mol) is a white crystalline powder that is sparingly soluble in water. It is present in drugs as ceftazidime pentahydrate.
Effects
Ceftazidime (ATC J01DA11) has bactericidal properties against numerous Gram-positive and Gram-negative germs. It is stable against many beta-lactamases. Its effects are based on inhibition of cell wall synthesis.
Indications
For treatment of bacterial infectious diseases with susceptible pathogens.
Dosage
According to the SmPC. The drugs are administered intravenously, intramuscularly, or as an infusion.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to components of the preparation and cephalosporins.

Interactions
Ceftazidime is not metabolized. Drug-drug interactions are possible with aminoglycosides, diuretics, chloramphenicol, and contraceptives.
Adverse effects
The most common possible adverse effects include diarrhea, injection site reactions, and rash.
