Olopatadine

Products

Olopatadine is commercially available in the form of eye drops (Opatanol). It has been approved in many countries since 2003.

Structure and properties

Olopatadine (C21H23NO3, Mr = 337.41 g/mol) is present in drugs as olopatadine hydrochloride. It is a dihydrodibenzoxepin derivative with a tricyclic structure.

Effects

Olopatadine (ATC S01GX09) has antihistamine, antiallergic, and mast cell stabilizing properties with a long duration of action. The effects are due to antagonism at histamine H1 receptors and mast cell stabilization.

Indications

For the treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis.

Dosage

According to the professional information. Usually 1 drop is placed in the eyes twice daily. See also under Administering eye drops.

Interactions

When using other eye drops, a time interval of approximately 5 to 10 minutes should be observed.

Adverse effects

Among the most common adverse effects local reactions to the eye such as eye pain, eye irritation, dry eye, insensitivity, as well as headache, taste disturbance, fatigue, and a dry nose.
