Acute treatment of diarrhea

Loperamide is used in the acute treatment of diarrheal diseases. Adults in the acute situation take two tablets/capsules with 2 mg. If symptoms persist, a further dose may be taken until the daily dose of 12 mg is reached.

The drug is offered by various companies without prescription. It is available in all pharmacies under the names Imodium®, Lopedium® and under the active ingredient name Loperamid. Detailed information on use, side effects etc. can be found on the package insert.

Summary

Loperamide as a peripherally acting opiod is used in the treatment of acute diarrhea. It causes a reduction in intestinal activity and thus thickens the stool. The drug is available without prescription and must not be taken for more than two days.

Children under twelve years of age are excluded from treatment with loperamide. Side effects such as headaches, dizziness and nausea may occur, but are rare.
