- In bone marrow transplantation, bone marrow is removed from the donor’s iliac crest via a punch. From this, stem cells are isolated and injected into the recipient. In stem cell transplantation (more precisely, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; HSCT; blood stem cell transplantation), which is a further development of bone marrow transplantation, stem cells are increasingly taken from the donor’s blood and injected into the recipient. These two procedures are the only ways to cure aplastic anemia.
- Administration of blood products in terms of red cell and platelet concentrates is counted as supportive therapy in aplastic anemia.
