Cartilage damage to the ankle joint and sports

Cartilage damage to the ankle joint can occur in many different ways. Often, damage is caused by an injury. Especially the “twisting / ligament stretching” inwards from the foot, also called suppination trauma, very often leads to cartilage damage of the ankle joint.

For this reason, the practice of certain sports is particularly predestined for the development of cartilage damage. These generally include all sports with a high running load, such as soccer, basketball, handball or jogging. In sports such as basketball, sudden stopping movements make it easier to twist the foot.

If cartilage damage is present, it should be treated if possible. Continued practice of sports with a high running load can lead to arthrosis of the joint and thus further expand the cartilage damage. Especially young and athletic patients should therefore consider a cartilage transplantation at the ankle joint.
