Central Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Causes

Pathogenesis (disease development)

Central sleep apnea syndrome (ZSAS) results from the respiratory muscles temporarily failing to receive stimulation from the central nervous system, through decreased activation of chemoreceptors. Many different causes (see below) may be responsible for this.

Etiology (causes)

Disease-related causes

  • Endocrinological (“affecting the endocrine system“) disorders.
  • Cardiac disorders (affecting the heart) – for example, heart failure (cardiac insufficiency).
  • Pulmonary disorders (“affecting the lungs”) – such as respiratory insufficiency (impaired respiratory function) due to chronic lung disease.
  • Central nervous (“affecting the central nervous system“) disorders – for example, narcolepsy (compulsive daytime sleeping).
