Cost of a crunch splint

The costs depend on the complexity of the treatment and the plastic materials used (softer or harder plastics). In addition, it depends on which types of crunch splints are required by the patient. A distinction is made between non-adjusted splints and adjusted splints.

In the non-adjusted version, a simple plastic arch is placed over the teeth rows. This is to relax the chewing muscles and prevent further wear and tear of the teeth. Adjusted bite splints are more elaborate and guide the two jaws into an optimal bite position in relation to each other, thus optimizing their position in the temporomandibular joint.

As a result, teeth grinding can be reduced and the jaw muscles relaxed. For this kind of splints it is necessary to get an exact model of the patient’s jaws by means of a dental impression, so that the splint can be fitted as precisely as possible. Such splints can cost up to 500€ (although usually the public health insurance companies contribute to the costs if a clear diagnosis is available).

The costs are completely covered by the public and private health insurance companies after the dentist has submitted an individual treatment and cost plan. A co-payment by the patient is usually not necessary. If a more elaborate crunch splint is required due to the symptoms, special measuring and diagnostic techniques may be necessary for its manufacture.

These are not covered by the statutory health insurance companies and must be paid for by the patient himself. In this regard, however, the patient should be informed by his dentist about the benefits and costs of these techniques in advance of treatment. In case of loss, the patient is dependent on the goodwill of his health insurance company. They are not obliged to cover the full cost of a lost splint. So before you go to the dentist for treatment, you should check with your health insurance company in advance if you will be reimbursed.
