Cushing’s Disease: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by Cushing’s disease:

Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).

  • Glaucoma (glaucoma)
  • Cataract (cataract; clouding of the lens)

Blood, blood-forming organs – immune system (D50-D90).

Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).

  • Obesity (obesity)
  • Diabetes mellitus (diabetes)
  • Hypercholesterolemia – lipid metabolism disorder that leads to an increased presence of cholesterol in the blood.
  • Hypernatremia (excess sodium).
  • Hypocalcemia (calcium deficiency)
  • Hypogonadism, secondary (gonadal insufficiency).
  • Hypokalemia (potassium deficiency)
  • Virilism – masculinization of women.
  • Growth stagnation in children

Skin and subcutaneous tissue (L00-L99)

  • Acne
  • Ecchymosis – small patchy skin bleeding.
  • Furunculosis – increased occurrence of furuncles (purulent hair follicle inflammation).
  • Skin atrophy
  • Skin ulcers (skin ulcers)
  • Hirsutism – male type of hair in women.
  • Edema – water retention in the tissues.
  • Striae rubrae – red skin stripes

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Muscle wasting and atrophy with myopathy (muscle disease).
  • Osteoporosis (bone loss)
  • Pathological fractures (bone fractures)
  • Proximal myopathy (muscle disease).

Neoplasms – tumor diseases (C00-D48)

  • Episternal fatty tumors – fatty growths that occur in the sternal region.

Psyche – nervous system (F00-F99; G00-G99).

  • Depression
  • Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH; synonym: pseudotumor cerebri, PTC) – increased intracranial pressure without explanatory cause; 90% of patients suffer from headaches, which usually increase with bending forward, coughing, or sneezing; papilledema (swelling (edema) at the junction of the optic nerve with the retina, which becomes apparent as a protrusion of the optic disc; congestive papilledema i. R. bilateral); occurrence with bilateral eye symptomatology.
  • Psychosis

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Ecchymoses – small-area bleeding of the skin or mucosa.
  • Hyperhidrosis – unphysiologically strong sweating.
