Diagnosis | Stab wound

Diagnosis

Diagnosis of stab wounds is quite easy due to the associated symptoms, the characteristics of the wound and the course of the accident. Extensive physical examinations are performed to assess the extent and depth of the wound. In the case of chest injuries, X-rays are taken to diagnose lung injuries or possible air infiltration.

Treatment

The treatment of a simple wound differs significantly from that of a severe stab wound. In order to stop the bleeding in the first place, the wound should be held over the heart position, as gravity reduces the blood flow to the site of the injury. In addition, the object that was used to stab the patient must not be pulled out of the wound in any way.

This could press a blood vessel, which could then lead to internal bleeding when the object is removed. The object must therefore only be pulled out by a physician. To stop the bleeding, a bandage or a pressure bandage is applied by a medical professional.

In the case of more severe internal stab injuries, surgery is scheduled. In the course of such an operation, the puncture channel is cut out and the wound is rinsed. Once a possible infection has been ruled out, the wound is sutured up, although the wound secretion should be able to drain off well.

If the doctor determines a risk of infection, the wound must heal openly. The injury must be checked conscientiously every day. If stab wounds are located in the abdominal cavity, it is opened to assess and treat the severity of the internal injuries.

When do I have to go to the doctor with a stab wound?

In order to be able to judge when a stab wound should be treated by a doctor, one should first of all consider the course of the accident. Severe knife stabs or stabs with an iron bar usually cause severe internal injuries, which must be treated by an experienced doctor. If the bleeding cannot be stopped or if the wound is bleeding splashed, a doctor should definitely be consulted. The high blood loss could cause a circulatory shock. In addition, a visit to a doctor is indispensable in case of sensory disturbances, paralysis or any restrictions in movement.
