Diet for Viral Hepatitis

Viral hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by viruses that can take a chronic course. There is no specific diet that can lead to a cure for the disease. Diet can only help to maintain health and increase well-being. This is primarily to be achieved by a healthy, wholesome diet.

Loss of appetite/weight loss

As part of drug therapy for hepatitis, patients may experience a loss of appetite and weight loss. It is important to eat enough to make up for the weight loss despite the loss of appetite.

  • Arrange the food appetizing, because the eye also eats.
  • Eat several small meals per day. Start with breakfast right after getting up and end the day with a bedtime snack. Have at least one hot meal per day.
  • Prepare small snacks for in between, such as an appetizing sandwich, a sliced apple, a cup of yogurt or a piece of fruitcake.
  • Prepare your favorite foods more often.

Food intolerances

Some hepatitis patients develop intolerances to certain foods (e.g., fatty foods, onions, leeks, etc.). However, this varies greatly from individual to individual, so there are no general guidelines. Try to avoid such foods that you know for sure cause intolerances. General avoidance of certain foods is not advised.
