Duration of sick leave
The duration of the sick leave in case of myocarditis depends on the severity of the disease, the general condition of the patient and the type of activity of the patient. It is not possible to specify a fixed duration of a sick leave, but the duration of a sick leave must be adjusted individually for each patient. If a patient affected by myocarditis is working in a profession that requires heavy physical labor, a sick note must of course cover a longer period of time.
In principle, patients with uncomplicated virus-related myocarditis should refrain from sports or heavy physical work for about three months. After this period, echocardiography and an ECG should be performed to rule out permanent damage to the heart or dangerous rhythm disturbances. If these examinations are inconspicuous and the patient is symptom-free, he can resume his activity or sports activities.
