Duration of testicular swelling
How long a testicle is swollen depends on the cause of the swelling. In case of inflammation or injury, the swelling usually subsides within a few days by cooling and elevating the scrotum and, if necessary, taking anti-inflammatory medication. A swelling caused by a hydrocele will in many cases disappear spontaneously over time.
This can take weeks to months. In some cases, however, the swelling remains untreated for life. Whether surgical therapy is necessary depends on the doctor’s assessment.
If a malignant disease (testicular cancer) is the cause of the swelling, it does not go down by itself but increases over time. In such a case, a prompt examination by the family doctor or urologist is urgently needed to exclude testicular cancer or at least to be able to treat it at an early stage.
