Facial Pain: Medical History

The medical history (history of the patient) represents an important component in the diagnosis of facial pain.

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?
  • Are there any diseases in your family that are common?

Social history

  • What is your profession?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Are you experiencing pain? If yes, when does the pain occur?
  • What is the character of the pain? Sharp, dull?
  • Where is the pain localized?
    • Eye?
    • Nose?
    • Cheek?
    • Jaw, upper jaw region?
  • Is it a continuous pain or an attack-like pain?
  • Does the pain intensify:
    • By cold?
    • When bending over?
    • When tapping the teeth?
  • Do you have a fever?
  • Do you feel sluggish?
  • Have you noticed any other symptoms such as skin changes, visual disturbances* , neurological disorders* , etc.?
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is very mild and 10 is very severe, how severe is the pain?
