Frequency of forms of dementia

Around 47 million people worldwide are currently suffering from a form of dementia, and the number is expected to grow in the coming years (the prevalence is expected to rise to 131.5 million people in 2050), due to the fact that demographic change means that more people are newly diagnosed with dementia each year than die among those already suffering from dementia. The risk of developing one of the forms of dementia increases significantly with age, so that it is estimated that about 1.2% of all people aged 65-69, 2.8-6% of those aged 70-79, 13.3-23.9% of those aged 80-89 and 34.6% of those over 90 are affected. Women are more likely than men to suffer from a form of dementia (70% of those affected are women).

The most common form of dementia is Alzheimer’s dementia, which accounts for about 50-60% of all dementias. In second place is vascular dementia, which is a vascular dementia, which accounts for about 20%. Mixed forms are rarer, however (15%).
