There are seven different ways to best remove earwax. A classical method is ear rinsing. The earwax is rinsed out with water.

There are also special ear cleaners. These are loop-shaped and mostly made of stainless steel. They allow to remove the earwax, but there is a risk of injury if handled carelessly.

When the earwax has hardened, ear drops help to soften it and make it easier to remove with the help of ear rinses or ear cleaners. Instead of ear drops, ear sprays can also achieve the same effect. Depending on the ingredients, drops or sprays can irritate the ear canal.

Most ear sprays contain seawater, which is usually less irritating to the ears than some chemical substances. Sometimes it is also possible to remove earwax with ear candles. The ear candles are put into the ear while burning.

A negative pressure is created and through this the earwax should be removed. The negative pressure loosens the earwax. Some feel a cleaning effect when using ear candles.

Some feel (additionally) this method as very relaxing. Moreover, there are various household remedy tips in circulation, which are discussed very controversially. If the earwax cannot be removed by yourself, there is the possibility of a professional ear cleaning by an ENT-doctor.

There are various household remedies that are recommended for ear cleaning. Some recommend to apply a few drops of a baby oil into the auricle and rub it into dry ears. Others recommend dripping the oil or olive oil directly into the ear in the evening before going to bed, letting it take effect and repeating this procedure several times.

The oil should soften the earwax. However, methods using oils are discussed very controversially.
