When should Livocab® eye drops not be given?

Contraindications for Livocab® eye drops are allergies or hypersensitivity to the active ingredient levocabastine or to other ingredients of the eye drops. Other ingredients to which an allergic reaction could occur are propylene glycol, disodium hydrogen phosphate, sodium hydrogen phosphate, hypromellose, polysorbate and benzalkonium chloride.

Side effects of Livocab® eye drops

Side effects associated with the use of Livocab® eye drops are rather rare or harmless. However, like many other active ingredients used in the eye, Livocab® eye drops can also irritate the eyes. Under certain circumstances, this can increase burning and itching and additionally lead to a reddening of the conjunctiva and the sclera (the white of the eyeball).

An increased vascular injection (formation of visible vessels on the white eyeball) can also occur as a side effect when using Livocab®. In addition, hypersensitivity to other ingredients of Livocab® eye drops can cause an allergic reaction in the eye. In addition, temporary blurred vision may occur when using the eye drops.

This is often caused by the amount of fluid suddenly present in the eye. Normally, the use of Livocab® eye drops does not lead to a systemic effect (occurring in the whole body) of the ingredient levocabastine. However, at particularly high doses, slight systemic side effects may be noticeable.

Typically, increased fatigue and exhaustion will occur. Affected persons are usually more quickly exhausted, but it is not always clear whether this is caused by the Livocab® eye drops or by the hay fever itself. In addition, dizziness, headaches and a feeling of weakness may occur when using the eye drops.

Interactions of Livocab® eye drops

Livocab® eye drops are not known to interact with other drugs. In the case of eye drops, this is usually due to the fact that the active ingredient only acts locally on the eye and is only absorbed into the body in very small quantities. Nevertheless, Livocab® eye drops should not be used together with other eye drops. There are also no known interactions for the active ingredient levocabastine.

For example, no interactions with other drugs have been reported to date even when levocabastine is taken in the form of tablets, injections or ointments. For Livocab® eye drops no interactions with other drugs are known. To date, there is no evidence that the eye drops or the active ingredient levocabastine interact with contraceptives when taken in other forms (tablets, injections, etc.). It is therefore assumed that the pill can also develop its normal effect when Livocab® eye drops are used.
