The following symptoms and complaints may indicate gonorrhea (clap):
Woman
Symptoms of “lower (acute) gonorrhea” in women.
- Cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix) – with increased vaginal discharge.
- Urethritis (urethritis) – accompanied by burning during urination and urethral discharge.
The infection in women usually goes unrecognized due to only minor symptoms (> 70% of cases). Other localizations of the infection such as on the rectum (rectum) or the throat usually run without symptoms.
Symptoms of “upper (chronic) gonorrhea” in women.
- Adnexitis – inflammation of the fallopian tubes and ovaries.
- Endometritis (inflammation of the uterus)
- Salpingitis gonorrhoica (inflammation of the fallopian tubes.
- Colicky lower abdominal pain
- Back pain
- Dyspareunia – pain during sexual intercourse.
- Increased menstrual cramps
- High fever
Man
Symptoms of “anterior (acute) gonorrhea” in men.
- Urethritis (inflammation of the urethra) associated with pain on urination.
- Mucopurulent urethral discharge
Symptoms of “posterior (chronic) gonorrhea” in men.
- Prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate)
- Epididymitis (inflammation of the epididymis)
- Balanitis (inflammation of the glans)
- Arthritis (inflammation of the joints) with accompanying exanthema (rash).
- Conjunctivitis (conjunctivitis)
- Urethritis posterior – inflammation of the urethral mucosa of the posterior urethral segments.
- Fever
- Flu-like symptoms
- Joint pain
Chronic gonorrhea in men runs rather weak. Usually the only sign is the so-called bonjour droplet, which flows out of the urethra in the morning before the first urination. This is pus that has accumulated in the urethra during the night.
Other indications
- The symptoms urethritis, arthritis and conjunctivitis are grouped as Reiter’s triad.
- Blepharoconjunctivitis is very rare in adults. It is manifested by severely swollen and reddened eyelids and creamy discharge from the eye.
Note: Gonorrhea can also lead to pharyngeal (throat) and rectal (rectum) infections, but these are often asymptomatic,
Warning signs (red flags)
- Gonorrhea detection in children may indicate child abuse
