Hair Loss (Alopecia): Therapy

General measures

  • Nicotine restriction (refraining from tobacco use).
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.
  • Avoidance of psychosocial stress:
    • Stress

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • Immunotherapy/phototherapy for alopecia areata (circular hair loss): in the dermatology department of Ulm University Hospital, patients with circular hair loss had a herbal substance (8-methoxypsoralen) dissolved in alcohol and then applied to the patient’s head by towel “turban” for twenty minutes. The area was then treated with UVA rays. This artificial sunburn resulted in a positive effect on the immune system and, if necessary, allows the hair to grow back.

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Dietary recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means:
    • A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Eating ≥ 3 times per week of raw vegetables (OR 0.43 95% CI 0.21-0.89, p = 0.02) and fresh herbs (regularly eating ≥ 3 times of herbs, OR 0.44; 95% CI 0.22-0.87, p = 0.02) was associated with a protective effect for alopecia androgenetica; comparison subjects were those who consumed raw vegetables twice or less per week and who did not use fresh herbs.
    • Fresh sea fish once or twice a week, i.e., fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grain products).
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
