History | Osteomyelitis of the temporomandibular joint

History

Normally, osteomyelitis in the jaw takes a good course, as good treatment options are available. The most severe complication of acute osteomyelitis is the chronicity of this condition. In some cases, osteomyelitis results in tooth loss, impaired chewing function or even the spread of the infection to other parts of the body.

Prophylaxis

To prevent osteomyelitis of the jaw, adequate hygiene of the oral cavity and teeth is the most important measure (this includes regular check-ups at the dentist!). In addition, one should try not to be too generous with the use of antibiotics, as bacteria then have an easier time trying an infection and are already resistant to the appropriate antibiotics. In case of unclear pain and swelling in the jaw area, a doctor should be consulted immediately in any case.
