History | Tooth extraction – What you need to know

History

In the Middle Ages, so-called tooth pullers traveled from fairground to fairground to pull teeth on a podium. This was done as a popular amusement for the fairground visitors. The poor patients, however, had to endure hellish pain, because an anesthetic for pulling teeth did not exist at that time. In addition, instruments were used, which in many cases removed not only one tooth, but the neighboring teeth as well, since they were supported on them. The consequences were not only the removal of the teeth but often also the removal of parts of the jawbone.

Summary

Removal of teeth is performed under local or block anaesthesia.A distinction is made between the normal extraction of a tooth and its surgical extraction. In both cases the tooth is first loosened with a lever and then removed with pliers. In most cases a post-treatment is not necessary if the blood coagulum in the wound is not removed.
