Implementation | Hymen reconstruction

Implementation

The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient basis and under local anesthesia. Only in rare cases, if the patient so desires, can the procedure be performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon uses a laser scalpel for the procedure, which is particularly gentle on the tissue and prevents major bleeding.

This minimizes the occurrence of unwanted secondary bleeding. The procedure differs depending on the possible presence of hymen remains. From these remains the surgeon forms at best a new hymen.

If there are no remnants, the surgeon removes vaginal tissue. Self-dissolving sutures are used for suturing together. This means that the woman does not have to go to the doctor again to have the sutures removed. After about 4 to 6 weeks the new hymen is usually completely healed. New blood vessels even form during this process.

Aftercare

Camomile baths are recommended for aftercare. Full baths should be avoided to keep possible germs away from the operated area. For aftercare, it is important to avoid sports for a while.

About 4 to 6 weeks should be paused. Tampons should also not be used during this time if possible. This is to avoid possible postoperative bleeding or tearing of the freshly restored hymen. After hymen reconstruction, intercourse should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks. This should be considered when planning a possible wedding.

Complications

Since this is a very small procedure, which is usually performed under local anesthesia, very few complications are expected. The tissue of the vagina is normally very well supplied with blood and so the small wounds will heal quite quickly. Hypersensitivity of the vagina may occur, but this will disappear of its own accord after a short time. In rare cases there may be slight bleeding or the vagina may become inflamed. However, both of these symptoms usually disappear after a few days.

Duration

The hymen reconstruction procedure itself takes only about 20 to 60 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia. The patient is then allowed to do all the daily chores. However, she should not take up sports again until 4 to 6 weeks. In addition, there is the duration of the consultation, which is carried out in advance. Depending on the patient’s situation and needs, one or more consultations of varying length take place.
