Introduction

The fruit (child) is threatened by an infection (inflammation) during pregnancy on the one hand already in the womb (by the infected blood of the mother, which reaches the fruit via placenta). On the other hand, especially in the case of genital infections, there is a risk that the foetus becomes infected in the birth canal. It is therefore important to check the vaccination protection before a planned pregnancy and to avoid possible sources of infection during pregnancy. The pathogens can be bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi, the occurrence of which depends strongly on the country of residence of the mother! Infections during pregnancy can lead to a risk pregnancy.

Infections through bacteria

Syphilis, which has become very rare in our latitudes, can lead to premature birth and miscarriage and can also be transmitted to the newborn. In the first 2 years of a child’s life, rashes and rhinitis can occur. After the 2nd year of life deformities of the nose, shinbone and incisors as well as hearing loss occur.

If the woman is treated with antibiotics during pregnancy, an infection of the child can be prevented. This bacterial infection is one of the most common infant infections in industrialized countries: 6% of all infants are affected. Among pregnant women, about one in ten is infected.

For this reason, a check for a questionable infection is usually carried out at the beginning of pregnancy. The main symptom in women is inflammation of the cervix (cervicitis). During pregnancy there is an increased risk of premature birth and if the fetus becomes infected in the birth canal, conjunctivitis is usually the result.

The expectant mother receives antibiotics as therapy. The newborn baby is given antibiotic eye drops in many clinics to prevent conjunctivitis. The pregnant woman gets the infection mainly by eating dairy products and raw meat.

The mother shows hardly any symptoms, but the fetus is threatened by miscarriage or blood poisoning (sepsis). If the newborn infects itself during or after birth, there is a risk of meningitis in the baby (meningoencephalitis, bacterial meningitis). Both the mother and the newborn are treated with antibiotics.
