Inflammation of a birthmark

The term birthmark is a synonym for the technical term nevus. It refers to benign growths of the skin, which include different types of cells. These can be pigment-producing cells, sebaceous gland cells or blood vessel cells.

The nevus does not necessarily have to be brown and can vary in shape and elevation. There are a large number of different nevi, which differ in their cell composition. In general, the term “mole” or “mole” refers to benign pigment cell nevi that have reddish to brown pigmentation and can be of different shapes.

There are certain criteria that can help to assess the quality (is it a benign or a tendentially malignant mole?). With the help of this so-called ABCDE rule (see below), you can check your moles yourself in front of the mirror and thus consult a doctor at an early stage in case of noticeable changes. The dermatologist then looks at all moles from head to toe in a so-called screening examination and documents any changes. This is a very important form of cancer prevention.

Is the inflammation dangerous?

Inflammations can have different causes. They can occur in the context of bacterial infections, for example, when the skin is injured, or they can also have their origin inside our skin. Scratching a birthmark, so that it sometimes even bleeds, is the entry port for germs of any kind.

These can be skin germs, but also other bacteria, which can accumulate in contaminated wounds, for example. Inflammations can be recognized by the classic signs of inflammation. These five classic signs of inflammation characterize the symptoms more closely.

Inflamed areas are reddened (rubor), swollen (tumor), painful (dolor), warm (calor) and sometimes restricted in their function (functio laesa). Moles can become inflamed in the same way as other areas of the skin. Whether the inflammation of a birthmark is dangerous depends on where the birthmark is located and which germs are responsible for the inflammation. If, for example, the germs are carried into the bloodstream, this can have serious consequences for those affected.
