Knee Joint | Villonodular Synovitis

Knee Joint

The knee joint is affected by villonodular synovitis in about 80% of cases, making it the most affected joint. Since the disease occurs in only one joint, knee pain is not present on both sides as in other diseases. Often, villonodular synovitis cannot be directly distinguished from cysts or other tumors.

Prognosis

The prognosis for the nodular form is already quite good after a single treatment. Often the disease can be cured by a single removal of the tumor. In the diffuse form, the rate of recurrence is unfortunately higher.

In this case, however, irradiation can increase the chances of a long-term cure. In order to restore the function of the joint in the long term, adequate physiotherapy is necessary to strengthen the muscles.
